( History ) :
Up until the start of the series, Honey Kisaragi had always thought she was just your average girl. She attended St. Chapel’s boarding school, along with best friend Natsuko Aki, where everyone looked up to her for being so beautiful and good at fencing. Her adventure started on the day of her sixteenth birthday, when she left the school to meet with her father Takeshi Kisaragi, a scientist. While he did indeed arrive on the scene, he was being pursued by the notorious group of criminals, the Panther Claw. Seiji Hayami, a private detective, appeared just in time to help the two escape, but after a wild car chase, Dr. Kisaragi was kidnapped by the Panther Claw anyway. Shocked and in denial, Honey returned to their old house to find that it had been burned to the ground. There, she was confronted by a mysterious man (the Twilight Prince) who claimed to be an old acquaintance of her father’s. He presented her with a choker and a ring, things that had been meant to be passed on to Honey. Indeed, they were the very reason that Dr. Kisaragi had been abducted by Panther Claw in the first place. These items, combined with the power of Honey’s love, could be used to activate the “Elemental Matter Transformation Device” (kūchū genso kotei sōchi). Spurred by her desire to pursue the Panther Claw, she used the device to transform into Hurricane Honey, changing not only her appearance but also materializing a motorcycle out of nothing. Such was the true power of the Elemental Matter Transformation Device her father had left her.
She pursued the Panther Claw to their zeppelin hideout, transforming into several other maidens as she infiltrated the place. Scoop Honey, Escort Honey, Elegance Honey, Stage Honey... All with their own appearance and ‘personality’. Then, finally, she transformed into what she referred to as her ‘true form’, Cutey Honey, the maiden with the power of love. She succeeded in finding her father, who’d been shackled to a wall inside the zeppelin, but was unable to free him. After telling her to be strong, as she was the only one who could stop the Panther Claw, Dr. Kisaragi cast her out of the zeppelin just before it crashed into a bridge. Honey assumed that he’d died, but the very next episode she received a message from the Twilight Prince to inform her that her father was still alive and in Panther Claw’s captivity. From there on began Honey’s battle to find her father and free him, at the same time destroying Panther Claw’s minions and preventing them from stealing rare, valuable items. In every adventure, Cutey Honey would run into and be aided by Seiji, who had his own reasons for challenging the Panther Claw. He would also keep Honey Kisaragi updated on Panther Claw-related incidents, though he never wanted her to get involved in such matters. Despite the small similarities, Seiji was unable to identify Cutey Honey as Honey Kisaragi. For the first half of the series, she was also aided by the Twilight Prince, who would appear before her to offer advice and lead her back on the right track whenever she was led astray.
In episode 7, Honey learned (as Cutey Honey) that Seiji’s father had been a private detective and his rolemodel. He was killed ten years ago by Sister Jill, one of the most high-ranking members of Panther Claw and one of Panther Zora’s two ‘children’. Episode 7 is also the episode where Seiji first meets the Twilight Prince and Honey first meets Sister Jill. For a long while, Dr. Kisaragi was in an unconscious state as Prince Zera, another one of the high-ranking Panther Claw members, attempted to patch him up. However, he awoke in episode 10, but suffered from a severe case of amnesia that left him unable to tell them where they could find the Elemental Matter Transformation Device. Sister Jill suspected that the device was left with Dr. Kisaragi’s daughter and sent a minion out to search for her in episode 11. There, it was confirmed to Jill that Honey was in fact Cutey Honey and she was in possession of the Elemental Matter Transformation Device that Panther Zora wanted so desperately. In the following episode, Jill also began to suspect that the Twilight Prince and Prince Zera were the same person. Dr. Kisaragi escaped the hold of Panther Claw in the same episode and was found by Seiji, who informed Honey right away. However, Sister Jill had located the man as well and thus began a race between Honey and the Panther Claw to reach Dr. Kisaragi first. Sadly, Seiji lost track of the man in an old, closed-down themepark. One that he’d visited with Honey when she was a child. While he was unable to remember why, he knew that place was important to him. Honey realized the same thing when she saw the ferris-wheel in the distance and hurried towards it. There, she was assaulted by Sister Jill, who was still determined to get her hands on the transformation device. Just as Honey was about to be reunited with her father, Jill snatched him away before her eyes and offered a deal. The Elemental Matter Transformation Device in exchange for Dr. Kisaragi’s life.
Honey swore vengeance against Sister Jill and sought her out (as Cutey Honey) in the proposed location, a Panther Claw castle base, in episode 13. Seiji, who was still oblivious to her identity, appeared on the scene as well, determined to land a critical blow in the Panther Claw ranks. Together, they fought their way to the depths of the castle to find Sister Jill. Demanding the choker around Honey’s neck, she held not only Dr. Kisaragi hostage, but captured Seiji as well. When Cutey Honey refused to relent, Sister Jill encased Seiji in a stone cube and launched him into an abyss of lava. Enraged, Honey decided to stand her ground instead of giving up. A fierce battle ensued and Sister Jill was defeated, allowing Honey to reunite with her father, who had regained his memories. As the castle began to collapse, Panther Zora appeared before the wounded Sister Jill. She branded her daughter a failure and left her die. Prince Zera then appeared alongside a mysterious female companion to finish Jill off. After leaving the castle to reach the seaside, Honey found Seiji collapsed in a speedboat and ran towards him, while her father spotted Prince Zera behind them. Instead of joining Honey, he left with Zera instead, leaving his daughter with the parting words that she should continue to fight and remain strong, as that was her destiny.
Episode 14 featured the appearance of a new female nemesis. A new student at Honey’s school who went by the name of Seira Hazuki. She was soon revealed to be Honey’s lost sister who, after a lifetime of living without her father, had finally been reunited with him. She was able to use a device similar to Honey’s to transform into Misty Honey and considered herself to be the shadow to Honey’s light. Raised by the Panther Claw and, most notably, Prince Zera, she bore a strange rose tattoo on her chest. Using Seira’s hatred of Honey as a catalyst, the rose would interact with Seira’s Elemental Matter Transformation Device to create monsters. Shortly after Seira’s first appearance, the Twilight Prince revealed to Honey that he was a member of the Panther Claw and that, from that moment on, the two of them would have to fight. He would hold Seira close and spur the girl to become closer to her father in the Panther Claw lair, but he would never allow the two sisters to kill each other too easily. As he claimed, this was a test of love and he wished to see which of the girls would ultimately prevail.
In episode 17, Dr. Kisaragi arranged a meeting with Honey, as he felt he owed her an explanation. They met up at their usual spot and he took her to the aquarium, where he told her more about the Elemental Matter Transformation Device. He explained that he used to do research for the Panther Claw, as did Prince Zera, and the transformation device was the fruit of his hard labor. However, when he’d realized what the Panther Claw would use the device for, he’d decided to destroy his research. Taking only one sample of the transformation device with him, he’d set fire to the laboratory and fled. He confirmed that Seira was indeed Honey’s sister, but the transformation device that she possessed was flawed and she’d been corrupted by the Panther Claw. In order to free her from their influence, he would have to stand by Seira instead of Honey. From that moment on, Honey attempted to befriend Seira, but her sister rebuffed every gesture and remained determined to destroy Honey. The Cutey Honey Flash movie was also set somewhere around this time and is generally considered to be filler. It revolves around a Professor, Robert Steiner, who had discovered a rare, supposedly extinct butterfly that would lead the way into an emerald temple. Naturally, the Panther Claw wanted to get their hands on it as well, so Honey and Seiji attempted to protect Professor Steiner as he uncovered the secret of the butterfly. Seira and Prince Twilight both made brief appearances, but didn’t play too large a role.
In episode 20, Honey realized that Seira was only being used by the Twilight Prince for his own goals. She fought him for her sister’s sake, but just before she could land a critical blow, Seira interfered to protect her prince. Cutey Honey burst into tears, realizing the power of her love was not enough to reach Seira. That’s when Seiji stumbled upon her and finally made the connection that Cutey Honey and Honey Kisaragi were in fact the same person. The following episode marked the final showdown between Cutey Honey and Misty Honey, as Seira kidnapped Seiji and dared Honey to fight her for him. A fierce battle ensued and eventually the duo fell into a greenhouse. When Honey noticed that Seira avoided stepping on a small flower, she realized that there was hope for her sister yet. The hatred was implanted into Seira’s heart by the Panther Claw, but surely love could grow there as well if she’d just allow it. The Twilight Prince appeared on the scene, calling such a concept laughable. He revealed that both Seira and Honey were in fact artificial beings created by the Elemental Matter Transformation Device that was not inside their jewelry, rather inside their own bodies. Therefore, they were not capable of emotions such as love.
Episode 22 then provides the full explanation. Sixteen years ago, when Dr. Kisaragi learned of the Panther Claw’s intention for the transformation device, he vowed to protect his invention and the power of love that it represented. In response to his feelings, the Elemental Matter Transformation Device gave birth to a child, the fruit of his love. Sister Jill entered the room and attempted to take the transformer but Prince Zera, who’d realized that the device could transform not only inert matter but even life itself, stepped in to stop her. Dr. Kisaragi activated the self-destruct function of the laboratory and fled with the newborn, leaving the remains of his research to be destroyed by the flames. However, Prince Zera managed to retrieve one more functional transformation device from the ashes. With the aid of Panther Zora, it was used to create Seira, who had false memories of abandonment and feelings of hatred implanted in her.
Crushed by the news, Seira fled the scene and Honey returned to Seiji’s apartment with him and her father. Dr. Kisaragi assured her that no matter how she was born, he had always considered her his daughter. Meanwhile, Seira’s feelings of loneliness and hatred gave birth to one last monster, her ‘other self’. Taking the form of Misty Honey, this being known as Dark Panther set out to destroy all those that Seira hated, starting with Prince Zera. However, the creation of this monster caused severe damage to her Elemental Matter Transformation Device and she was left weakened, unable to transform in fear it might cause her device to shatter. She pleaded for help from Honey, Seiji and her father, as she had no one else to turn to. Together, they traveled to Prince Zera’s hideout to find that Dark Panther had already confronted him in combat. Cutey Honey stepped in to fight the monster instead and soon the battlefield was set ablaze with fire. When Seira rejected Dark Panther and its intentions, the creature turned on its creator instead. However, Dr. Kisaragi stepped in to take the attack that was meant for Seira, subsequently killing him. Filled with newfound determination, Seira took the risk and transformed into Misty Honey, facing Dark Panther in battle. The duo ran each other through with their swords and Seira’s transformation device shattered completely. Finally accepting Honey as her sister, Seira disappeared before her eyes. All that was left was the broken transformation device- Seira’s heart.
In the following episode, Honey challenged Prince Zera to one more battle. However, she continued unable to defeat him as he attempted to destroy her body so he could take the Elemental Matter Transformation Device. When all seemed lost, Seiji stepped forward to protect her. Prince Zera questioned his motives, for Cutey Honey was not human, but Seiji claimed it didn’t matter what Zera considered to be human. She was Honey Kisaragi, a girl who’d suffered numerous hardships that were forced upon her. Prince Zera claimed that it was none of Seiji’s business, to which he replied that he ‘liked’ Honey and he would protect her. As Seiji was struck down, the broken transformation device fell from his hand and landed before Honey, who took it and vowed she would never surrender. The device responded to her will and Seira’s spirit communicated with Honey’s. Seira explained that while it was true they were born to the Elemental Matter Transformation Device, they weren’t above humans. They could feel pain and lose blood when injured. They had all the flaws of a human because that had been their father’s wish. To be the fruit of his love- humans who would never surrender, no matter the hardships they faced. The transformation devices fused together, allowing Honey to transform further into Hyper Honey. Panther Zora’s image appeared before them, claiming she wanted the device immediately, but Zera turned against her. He refused to follow her orders any longer, claiming he’d finally found what he’d been looking for all that time.
With her newfound power, Honey was able to defeat Prince Zera and he witnessed the light of love inside of her. The same power of love that he’d witnessed sixteen years ago when the transformation device gave birth to life. It gave him hope that he too could be freed from the Panther Claw to experience such emotions. With that, Zera left on a journey to ‘search for the love inside his own heart’ and Honey returned to school with the burden that her father and sister had both died. The final scene of the episode marked the return of Sister Jill, who was now stronger than ever and seeking vengeance against both Zera and Cutey Honey. In episode 24, Jill and three of her strongest minions launched a direct attack on Honey’s school. She was forced to transform in front of her friends, Miss Miharu, Principal Danpei and his sister Alphonne, who were all very accepting of her secret and continued to stand by her. However, as the school had been destroyed, they would have to find new lodgings for the time being.
( Personality ) :
At first glance, Honey is just like every other girl. She laughs, she loves, she teases and she cries. No one would ever notice she’s an artificial being, nor would they believe it after being told otherwise. Born and raised to be a normal human, that’s exactly what she is. Other girls admire her for beauty and skill with the sword, but she politely waves it off and doesn’t consider herself anything special. She doesn’t like to burden her friends with her secret ‘destiny’ either, fearing it would only endanger them.
Towards strangers, Honey adopts a very formal attitude. She addresses them respectfully and is quick to apologize. Her admiration towards her father is so great, she refers to him as “outou-sama” (a respectful way of saying “father”) no matter what the circumstances. However, she also has nicknames for those who are especially close to her. Her best friend Natsuko is referred to as “Nat-chan” and she’s not afraid to call her teacher, Miss Miharu, an old hag. Honey doesn’t always obey the rules, as she’s not afraid to sneak out of the school in the middle of the night and even goes as far as to distract Miss Miharu with pictures of handsome young men- her greatest weakness.
As all girls, Honey dreams of romance and her perfect ‘prince’. The Twilight Prince, who is a courteous gentleman in every way and would always offer her flowers, is her ideal in the beginning of the series. Meanwhile, the coarse and blunt Seiji avoided her affection for quite a long time. It wasn’t until she realized how similar she was to the detective that she began to open up to him and even team up with him, but even then she didn’t consider him to be a romantic interest. When she learns of the Twilight Prince’s true identity, she becomes forlorn and easily distracted. However, it’s Seiji of all people who puts her back on the right track by reminding her that if it hadn’t been for that Prince, she would never have grown so strong. Honey realizes that notion’s true and decides that instead of relying on her prince, she’ll just have to rely on herself.
She believes her power of love can achieve any goal. This includes her attempts to reach Seira and befriend her. No matter how much grief Seira attempts to cause her, she in turn continues her attempts to make peace. Honey simply can’t believe why she and her sister can’t come to understand each other’s feelings and it causes her great pain when she fails to do so. After losing both her father and her sister, she becomes isolated from her friends and even has trouble turning to Seiji, but all she needs is a good wake-up call to remind her that her friends will stick by her side no matter what. They would gladly give their life to protect Honey so she, in turn, works harder to protect them.
What drives Honey to fight is the immense love she feels for her father and later her companions. When she becomes Cutey Honey, she becomes more confident. Her demeanor becomes more serious and she does whatever it takes to reach her goal. No matter how battered her body or what sort of a predicament she’s in, she refuses to give up. Her other alter egos, while all with their own personal aspects, share that confidence. The assorted Honeys are very cheerful and their attitudes aren’t easily broken.
( Strengths/Weaknesses ) :
Strengths:
Even as a regular schoolgirl, Honey excelled at fencing class. Not only that, she seems to have a knack for most sports. Tennis, volleyball, you name it. However, what truly makes her strong is the Elemental Matter Transformation Device. Every one of her alter egos has a special skill that suits the situation and every one of her alter egos is born from her own will and imagination. Does she need to travel across town in a hurry? Hurricane Honey and her motorcycle can get the job done. Does she need to blind enemies? Scoop Honey’s camera has a mighty strong flash. Acrobat Honey could reach high places and Cherub Honey has a bow and arrow that strike true. When surrounded by enemies with machine guns, Magnet Honey will draw the weapons from their hands. The list just goes on and on, with several new alter egos appearing in each episode. Honey knows how to use her transformation device creatively and quickly.
As Cutey Honey, she becomes an agile swordsman with several strong attacks. She wields a powerful sword known as the Silver Fleurette. The Honey Boomerang, which she shoots from a bracelet, hardly ever fails to hit a target and can obliterate the lower Panther Claw minions easily. The ‘monster of the week’ requires more heavy artillery: her special sword attack Honey Lightning Flare. This is Cutey Honey’s signature move in which she, quite literally, carves her signature into the monster. On rare occasions, Honey can even use the transformation device to heal her wounds and restore her body to perfect condition. After fusing her transformation device with Seira’s, it’s upgraded so that she can transform into Hyper Honey when the situation calls for it. The Honey Lightning Flare attack becomes stronger and receives the name Honey Virginal Invitation. From that moment on, she can also summon the Flash Breath, a small crossbow that can launch arrows of fire, water, lightning, or ice. These attacks are known as Honey Rouge Arrow.
Another aspect of her Elemental Matter Transformation Device, which she discovers late in the series, is that it can erase matter and return it to nothingness rather than create it. However, this sort of power intimidates Honey and she wisely decides that she will never use it.
Weaknesses:
While Honey is indeed very strong, at the same time one might say that her ‘defenses’ are terrible. In most of the episodes, enemies can successfully distract her and knock her off her feet. She gets strangled, whipped, poisoned and sent into emotional hallucinations more than once. Honey relies on landing a critical blow with her sword and if such an attack is unsuccessful, she’s pretty much out of options. When this happens, she needs to either think quickly to discover the monster’s weakness or rely on a companion to help her out of her predicament.
Honey’s emotions can often get the best of her, especially when it comes to people she cares about. She becomes absolutely crushed whenever she realizes she doesn’t know the Twilight Prince as well as she should and Seira has no problems at all messing with her mind. After learning the truth about the Elemental Matter Transformation Device, she yells at her father that she’d rather not have known, so she could’ve continued to live her life as an ordinary human girl. Basically, whenever she’s down, a companion needs to give her good advice before she realizes she needs to pull herself together. It is as Seira explains to her when the transformation devices resonate with each other: They were created to be human and have all the flaws that came with it, as that was their father’s wish. They carry both the positive emotions of humans and the negative ones, as well as all other weaknesses a human could have. Jealousy, a short temper when being teased, disobeying certain rules… Honey is an artificial lifeform, but she is far from perfect.

( Sample ) :
[It had been three weeks since Honey had arrived in Vatheon- three weeks since she’d been torn away from her home and her friends, and the knowledge that Sister Jill was still after her life. Just when she thought that life in this underwater bubble would be quiet and there would be no need for Cutey Honey, there was an attack.
Giant crustaceans scuttled through the city, destroying buildings and snapping their claws at innocent citizens. The defense group was already up in arms, but it was not enough, so Honey pushed her way through the masses to find a secluded area.]
This is insane…! When it’s not Panther Claw, it’s huge crabs! Why did this have to- [She broke off abruptly her shoulder collided with a stranger and turned to face them, bowing her head quickly.] Sorry! I’m so sorry, I wasn’t watching where I was… [She trailed off when she realized the stranger has already continued on their way to seek shelter.] Ah…
[Finally, she managed to divert her course into a deserted alleyway and moved herself behind a large trashcontainer. Let’s see… Crabs… Crabs and lobsters and…!]
Honeeeey flash! [The Elemental Matter Transformation Device responded to her call and her clothes vanished to be replaced by a new outfit, her hair turning from light blonde to a dark brown before disappearing under a neat white chef’s hat. In her hands appeared a large pot of boiling water and within seconds, Gourmet Honey was ready for battle.]
It’s dinnertime! Today’s special, boiled lobster! [With a wide smirk on her face, she dashed towards the center of the mayhem. Perhaps she had missed this just a little.]
‘Father… Seira… I’ll keep using this power of love that you gave me. I’ll make you proud!’
